A Card for the Last Days of Summer

It seems like everyone is focusing on Christmas Cards right now (late August) – but I am not in the mood. Yet. I have ordered some paper, and have been drooling over the idea of some star shaped shaker boxes, but for now, it is HOT outside, in the mid 90’s in Florida, and I’m not quite ready to give summer up.

I’ve been playing with my flowers, and being frustrated at not being able to obtain some of the very, very fancy flower stamens that I see on others cards, I have decided to improvise. Additionally, I have added some fussy cuts to lay under my dimensional flowers, to hopefully enhance the look.

I’ve used paper from the Heartfelt Creations “Floral Borders” collection, and my flowers are from HFC Classic Rose – although I didn’t exactly fashion them like a classic rose, did I? The little lacy edge is a paper punch from Martha Stewart that is probably 15 years old, and not available anymore.

The little woodchip clock is adorable – too bad some of it had to be covered up! I ordered this (probably) from Little Birdie Crafts a while ago, when they were having a sale on a lot of chippy elements – the sentiment is also from them – I just tapped it lightly with a little pink dye to help it blend in better.

Here is a little close up of one of the flowers – since I couldn’t find the fancy stamens, I added some dots to the petals by hand in pink and brown – it kind of looks like something you’d find on a Tiger Lily or an Orchid, doesn’t it? Anyway, its amazing what a 5 minute detail can add to the look of something.

Another close look at the flowers, I’m very pleased with how it turned out, and although the fussy cut flowers (from Mintay’s Graceful papers) don’t match exactly, they do have the same color scheme & add to the dimension.

Priceless Friendship card

This lovely uses Scrapandme Sapphire Days paper, it is about 4-1/2” x 7-1/2”. The flowers are (Heartfelt Creations dies) cut out of fomiron, and the fern are actually thin little woodcuts, which I found from Little Birdie Crafts – they are primed when you receive them, and I just daubed them with a little ink.

This is the inside of my card. I used the same sheet of paper that I had on the front, and just fussy cut he flowers out, and turned them lengthwise. Every time I do fussy cutting I marvel at people who claim to love it – what I love is die cutting! And electric die cutting machines like my Vagabond II, are the bomb!

Teaching myself how to heat the fomiron so that it does what I want it to, without burning me little fingers has quite a learning curve! I’m waiting with baited breath for some colored fomiron to come in the mail….it just adds such a nice, soft touch, but it is a little bit fiddly!

For the sentiments, I cheated and found a sticker pack from Hobby Lobby – I actually have about 5 of them – some are religious, some family oriented, some friendship – and their handwriting is much neater than mine!

Birds & Blooms cards

I’m branching out….not very far, but a wee bit, to explore other decorative paper companies. This past week I received the Birds & Booms from Little Birdie Crafts, I had been wait listed for so long, I almost forgot about it!

This paper is thick, very thick. Think cover of a paperback book thick, and add some weight to it. It is also very glossy, on both sides, both the white & decorative side. That being said, I used a lighter weight paper for my card base, about 60#.

This first card measures 5”x7”. As you can see, I have used some hand made roses and blossom, and borrowed the sentiment from a different paper pack.
This is the inside, aren’t these little birds adorable!! The right side (white background) features a circular punch out from the collection, and a strip from the embellishment page. On the left (pink background) the sentiment was fussy cut from the collection, and the white lace piece is a die cut from, guess where? Heartfelt Creations.
This is actually the first card I made from the collection, measuring 6”x6”. I used a white die cut bird cage, and a hand colored butterfly for the upper corner, and an organza lavender ribbon with two handmade purple petunias, and a bright pink flower in the center.
The inside of this card has a pocket (right above the wood slats) which I tucked a little ephemera card in to. Perfect for a sweet message of friendship.

This entire card probably took a mere 90 minutes to put together, since I already had the flowers made, and in my stash for “emergencies “!
